N64 Blog’s Best Buys of the Week – 07/01/13
Martin Watts January 7, 2013January. Quite possibly the most depressing month of the year. Christmas has come and gone, the New Year’s hangover has finally worn off and everyone’s poor. Some might even say destitute; such is the expense that is the festive season.
Well, we might be exaggerating a bit there. Money is certainly tight but with clever budgeting and by using up all that excess Christmas food (we’ve got a stack of Christmas puddings from over the years!), it’s more than feasible to stretch your money a bit further.
Which is just as well, because it’s a new week and a New Year and that means we all need a new game or seven. Screw the penny pinching, that’s what an overdraft is for (N64 Blog does not recommend racking up debt, no matter how rare or entertaining the game may be). So here is N64 Blog’s first instalment of Best Buys of the Week, a weekly collector and enthusiast advice piece pointing out some of the best offers around.
If you have an offer you want to share with us (given that we’re based in the UK, some help with international offers would be hugely appreciated), just drop us a line to contact@n64blog.com, and we’ll happily include it. Provided it’s a worthwhile bargain of course!
Virtual Pro Wrestling 2
- Condition: cart only
- Region: NTSC-J (Japan)
- Price: £9.99
- Available at: GenkiVideoGames.com (UK seller)
Essentially a Japanese version of Wrestlemania 2000, Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 features a number of characters from different Japanese wrestling federations. The game isn’t quite as showy as its American counterparts, but the gameplay is rock solid, as are the visuals, and Genki is selling the title for a very reasonable price. Please note that this will only work on a Japanese Nintendo 64 system.
Wave Race 64
- Condition: used, complete in box
- Region: PAL
- Price: £6.99 (+ £3.00 P+P)
- Available at: eBay (UK seller)
During a month with better cash-flow, we’d be advising you all to dish out that little bit extra and treat yourself to an NTSC version of Wave Rave 64. By comparison, its PAL counterpart is sluggish and suffers from the dreaded black border syndrome. But these are testing times and £9.99 isn’t a lot to ask for one of the N64′s best games, even in PAL format. The water physics are impressive, even by today’s standards, and jet skis in the sun serve as the ultimate distraction to the mundane winter weather.
Duke Nukem: Zero Hour
- Used, complete in box
- Region: PAL
- Price: £19.99 (free delivery)
- Available at: eBay (UK seller)
The Duke Nukem games for Nintendo 64 are fairly uncommon, which means finding a copy in good nick and at a reasonable price can be a tad difficult. The above listing seems like a pretty good deal for a CIB copy of Duke Nukem: Zero Hour, especially when it’s up as a Buy It Now listing. Visually, the game looks very nice (and long gone are the 2D sprites of the first game), although the frame rate can be a bit of an issue, especially when using the hi-res mode afforded by the N64′s Expansion Pak.
